Pinot Meunier is a red wine grape most noted for being one of the three main varieties used in the production of Champagne (the alternates being Pinot Noir or Chardonnay). It is also one of the most widely planted grapes in France.
Meunier is one of the four grape varieties in the Pinot family. Originating in France, the name Pinot is derived from the French word ‘Pine’, referring to the grape variety’s tightly clustered, pine cone-shaped bunches of fruit. The other relatives are Pinot Noir (Black), Pinot Blanc (White), and Pinot Gris (Grey). Although Meunier and Noir are red varietals, Pinot Meunier produces lighter-colored wines.
Whilst Blanc, Noir and Gris are obvious to assign meaning in the translation, Meunier is a little more left field, with the translation meaning ‘Miller’ in French. The name is apparently derived from the appearance of the bottom of the leaf, which is white and looks like it’s been dipped in flour. I did say it was left field!
The varietal is relatively rare in Australia. Although it is found in some sparkling wines, it is seldom seen on the label. If you do get the opportunity, it’s a varietal worthy of sampling. A great example can be found at Printhie Wines in Orange.
Aromas
The aromatic profile of Pinot Meunier is fresh, vibrant, and enticing. It features juicy red fruits like cherry and cranberry, with occasional orchard fruit notes like pear or apple. It has floral notes of subtle violet and rose and earthy undertones of wet earth, mushroom, or spice.
Flavours
Pinot Meunier’s flavour profile is fruit-driven and accessible, with subtle complexity with red apple, strawberry, and raspberry fruit flavours. The wine has secondary notes of violets, fresh herbs, and a touch of cinnamon. Tertiary flavours of dried fruit and nutty nuances are found in aged wines.
Tannins and Body
Low to medium tannins are typically soft and silky, contributing to a smooth texture. The wines are light to medium-bodied, with a refreshing and approachable style.
Cool v Warm climate
Pinot Meunier’s character varies depending on the climate, influencing its fruit expression, structure, and style:
Cool-climate wines have bright red fruits, such as cranberry and tart cherry, with crisp acidity and more herbal and floral nuances. Higher acidity results in fresher and more vibrant wines, particularly suited for sparkling styles. Softer and lighter tannins enhance the wine’s elegance and drinkability. The wines are light, refreshing, and delicate, often focusing on aromatics. You will find these in regions like Champagne (Marne Valley) and cooler areas in Germany and England.
Warm-climate wines have riper red and black fruits, such as strawberry, plum, and blackberry, with more pronounced spice and earthy notes. Slightly lower acidity leads to a rounder and more fruit-forward profile. Slightly more pronounced tannins contribute to a fuller texture in still wines. The wines are fuller-bodied and richer, with a fruit-driven focus and added depth. You will find these in warmer parts of California, Australia, and New Zealand.
