Durif is a French red grape varietal (known as Petite Sirah) primarily grown in the USA but in smaller quantities in France, Australia, and Israel. The variety was discovered in the late 1800s and named after its discoverer, Dr Francois Durif. Viticulturist Francois de Castella introduced it into Australia in 1908.
The varietal is a crossing (like Cabernet Sauvignon). Its two-parent grapes are Peloursin (a rare black grape from southwest France) and Syrah. Both parental varieties are known for making wines with intensity, depth and flavour length. Durif is known for its dark hue and firm tannins; it is often used as a blending wine to provide colour and structure, although it is sometimes found on its own, delivering intense, peppery and often age-worthy wines. Today, the variety grows primarily in California, where it is often used to add body to Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.
In Australia, Durif’s old plantings continue to produce popular wine in the Rutherglen region of Victoria. Durif is now grown in other wine regions, such as Riverina and Riverland, with over 740 acres under cultivation in 2000.
Aromas
Durif’s aromatic profile is rich and captivating. It has concentrated dark fruit aromas like blackberry, cassis, black cherry, black pepper, clove, and hints of vanilla from oak ageing. You will also find earthy aromas of ground coffee and mushrooms and occasionally a touch of violet or lavender.
Flavours
Durif offers a powerful flavour profile dominated by dark fruits and spice. Its flavours include blackberry, blueberry, and black plum fruits, as well as chocolate, black pepper and black tea. You may find herbal flavours like dried rosemary and menthol and prune and jam flavours.
Tannins and Body
High tannins provide a firm structure and excellent ageing potential. The wines are full-bodied, with a dense and velvety mouthfeel. This varietal and other high-tannin wines contain 2-3 times more antioxidants than lighter wines.
Cool v Warm climate
The climate plays a significant role in shaping Durif’s intensity, flavour concentration, and balance:
Cool-climate wines have brighter fruit notes like tart blackberry and blueberry, with more pronounced acidity and subtle herbal or earthy tones. Higher acidity gives a fresher and more balanced profile. Firmer and more angular tannins add to the wine’s structure. They have an elegant and slightly restrained style, emphasising fresh fruit and earthy complexity. You will find these in cooler areas of Australia, parts of Northern California, and regions with moderate climates.
Warm-climate wines have dominant ripe, jammy black fruit flavours like blackberry and plum. You will also find richer chocolate, mocha, and spice notes. Lower acidity creates a smoother and more opulent profile. Riper and softer tannins offer a more approachable texture in youth. The wines are bold, fruit-forward, and concentrated, often with a luscious mouthfeel. You will find these in California (Paso Robles, Napa Valley), South Australia, and South America.
