The Fraser Valley is in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, just east of Vancouver and north of the Canada-U.S. border. It encompasses the area surrounding the Fraser River, including communities such as Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Mission. While historically known for its agriculture, the Fraser Valley has recently emerged as a notable wine-producing region.

The modern wine industry in the Fraser Valley dates back to the late 20th century, with the first vineyards and wineries being established in the region during the 1980s and 1990s. However, it has experienced growth and development in recent years, with an increasing number of wineries and a growing reputation for quality wines.

The region benefits from a mild maritime climate influenced by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the Fraser River. It experiences relatively mild winters and warm, dry summers, with cooling breezes from the ocean helping to moderate temperatures. The valley’s diverse microclimates and fertile soils produce a wide range of grape varieties, including cool-climate and warm-climate varietals. While the region is best known for its white wines, particularly aromatic varieties such as Gewürztraminer and Bacchus, it also produces red wines such as Pinot Noir and Merlot. In addition to still wines, some Fraser Valley wineries also produce sparkling wines and dessert wines.

Many wineries in the region are committed to sustainable and organic farming practices, emphasizing environmental stewardship and biodiversity. Some wineries are certified organic or practice sustainable viticulture, minimizing chemical inputs and focusing on natural pest and disease control methods.

The Fraser Valley has become a popular destination for wine tourism, attracting visitors from Vancouver and beyond who come to explore its scenic vineyards, taste local wines, and learn about the region’s winemaking history and practices. Several wineries in the Fraser Valley offer tastings, tours, and events throughout the year, allowing visitors to experience the region’s wines firsthand.
