Malbec

Malbec is a red wine grape variety and is known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of Bordeaux wine. However, it has been steadily replaced by the hardier MerlotCabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.

The Malbec grape is a thick-skinned grape with an inky dark colour. It needs more sun and heat to mature than Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. It ripens mid-season and can bring very deep colour, ample tannin, and a particular plum-like flavour component that adds complexity to blends.

Though perhaps best known for its plantations in FranceMalbec is widely celebrated in Argentina as a dominant varietal. Today, Argentina produces 75% of the world’s Malbec wines, the majority coming from around Mendoza, with the best originating in the high-elevation subregions of Uco Valley and Lujan de Cuyo.

The varietal is not substantial in Australia as the early plantings were of poor quality and highly susceptible to frost and downy mildew. By the mid to late 20th century, many acres of Malbec were uprooted and planted with different varieties. By 2000, there were slightly over 500 hectares, with the Clare Valley and Langhorne Creek having the most significant amount. As newer clones became available, plantings in Australia have increased somewhat.

Aromas

Malbec’s aromatic profile is rich and inviting. Its flavours include ripe black fruits like blueberry, plum, and blackberry. The grape also has subtle hints of violet, particularly from high-altitude vineyards. You may find spicy and earthy undertones of black pepper, mocha, and a touch of smokiness.

Flavours

Malbec is celebrated for its deep fruit and spice profile, which includes blackberry, red plum, and blueberry flavours. Sage, cocoa, vanilla, and tobacco tones may also be present.

Tannins and Body

Malbec has medium to high tannins that are often velvety and well-integrated, providing structure and age-worthiness. The wines are full-bodied, with a smooth and lush texture that balances richness with vibrancy.

Cool v Warm climate

Malbec’s character is significantly shaped by the climate in which it is grown, leading to diverse styles:

Cool-climate wines have brighter red fruits like raspberry and cranberry, with hints of cherry and more pronounced floral and herbal notes. Higher acidity lends freshness and elegance, and firmer and slightly grippier tannins contribute to a more structured and refined style. The wines are lighter and more nuanced, emphasising elegance and aromatic complexity. You will find these in high-altitude vineyards in Argentina (Uco Valley) and cooler parts of France (Cahors).

Warm-climate wines have jammy black fruits such as blackberry and plum with richer chocolate and spice notes. Lower acidity results in a rounder, softer profile. Riper and smoother tannins contribute to a plush mouthfeel. The wines are bold, fruit-forward, and concentrated, often with a touch of smokiness or mocha. You will find these in Mendoza’s lower-altitude areas, Australia and California.
