Megalong Valley Wine Region – NSW

The Blue Mountains are situated just outside the Central Ranges wine zone and is officially within the South Coast wine zone, although it shares a climate more akin to the ranges than the coast.

It is a breathtaking region just over 100km west of Sydney, around a 2-hour drive from the airport.  The area is renowned for panoramic canyons, plateaus, escarpments and sweeping landscapes.

You can discover beautiful walking trails in the area. Of note, is the Six Foot Track, a historic walking trail between Katoomba and the Jenolan Caves, winding through Megalong Valley. The whole walk typically takes around three days, although annually it is raced as an Ultra Marathon for those up for some extreme elevation challenges.

There are three producers and only two cellar doors in the region, all situated in Megalong Valley.

The turn-off from Blackheath leads you down Megalong Road, descending rapidly and windingly through an otherworldly rainforest backdrop until reaching the valley floor. The views from the Megalong wineries are a treat for the eye. Tasting hand-crafted, cool climate wine while looking out over the vines and up to the towering escarpments is an experience to savour.

The Blue Mountains is not an officially recognised wine region. As such, we have used artistic license to create the region’s borders for the embedded maps to include the location of Darragh Wines, which get more delicious with each vintage. Despite not being an official region, it is certainly worthy of note due to its fantastic location. In particular, Dryridge Estate, where the tranquil ambience of the winery combined with warm welcomes, rugged backdrop and delicious wines, make for an unforgettable experience. We were particularly impressed with both their zesty Pinot Gris and the earthy yet perfumed Pinot Noir. Certainly worth a visit.
