The Margaret River wine region is approximately 280 km south of Perth, Western Australia. It extends from the Indian Ocean coastline inland to the forested areas of the Blackwood River Valley. It forms part of the South West Australia wine zone, which it shares with Geographe, Great Southern, Blackwood Valley, Manjimup and Pemberton. The region encompasses the towns of Margaret River, Cowaramup, and Augusta, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists.

Margaret River’s history dates back to the nineteenth century, albeit on a small scale. The grandfather of the late Dr Kevin Cullen (founder of Cullen Wines) established a vineyard at Bunbury in 1890. The winery continued until 1921 and was swallowed up in Bunbury’s urban sprawl. Viticulture only returned to the region in 1967 when Dr Tom Cullity established Vasse Felix. Others quickly followed it, and almost overnight, Margaret River’s future and potential seemed unlimited. The area has rapidly gained recognition and is now considered one of Australia’s premier wine regions, renowned for its exceptional wines and stunning scenery and vistas.

The maritime system more strongly influences Margaret River’s climate than that of any other major Australian region. Situated on the coast, Margaret River is low and flat. The moderately warm Mediterranean climate is kept cool by the ocean, which surrounds the region on three sides. In a dry year, the region’s climate is similar to Bordeaux.

This region is not only famous for its wine. Its stunning landscapes, beaches, and gourmet food experiences make it a popular tourist destination. Over 1 million visitors annually visit, drawn by wine tours, festivals, and culinary experiences.
