The Auckland wine region is situated in and around New Zealand’s largest city, blending urban vibrancy with scenic rural landscapes. Many vineyards are within 30 minutes to 1 hour from the city centre; with coastal vineyards, rolling hills, and volcanic soils, the region offers diverse terroirs that produce premium wines.
The region includes four sub-regions, the most well-known of which is Waiheke Island. This warm and dry maritime climate promotes intensity and depth. The area is renowned for its Cabernet blend, peppery Syrah, elegant Chardonnay, fruit-filled Montepulciano and Petit Verdot. The island is a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland Harbour, making for a fabulous day trip. The island combines stunning coastal scenery with high-quality viticulture.
Kumeu is a sub-region just a short drive west of the city, and many of the country’s oldest wine families still call this region home after settling here nearly 100 years ago. The region’s old Chardonnay and Merlot vines produce fruit that is used to create stylish wines, which have gained much international acclaim.
Matakana is a boutique sub-region an hour north of Auckland, celebrated for its handcrafted, small-batch wines, including Bordeaux-style reds and Pinot Gris. The vines are relatively young here but still produce fruit-filled wines.
Clevedon, situated just south of Auckland, is a boutique sub-region celebrated for its premium vineyards and distinctive wines. The area’s hilly terrain and favourable climate contribute to producing high-quality wines, particularly red blends inspired by Bordeaux traditions.
Auckland’s winemaking history dates back to the 19th century, making it one of New Zealand’s oldest wine regions. Croatian and Dalmatian immigrants significantly influenced the region, introducing traditional European winemaking practices. Today, Auckland is home to both heritage wineries and innovative boutique producers. Some of New Zealand’s oldest wineries, including Babich Wines and Nobilo, have their roots in Auckland.

The region experiences warm summers with average temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C and moderate rainfall, receiving 1,000–1,200 mm annually.
