The North Canterbury wine region stretches along the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, just north of Christchurch, with the magnificent Alps to the west and the sweeping Pacific Ocean to the east. The region spans approximately 200 kilometres, from the Waipara Valley to the southern tip of Marlborough.

North Canterbury comprises several distinct sub-regions, with the Waipara Valley, just a 45-minute drive (60 kilometres) north of Christchurch, being the region’s focal point. This proximity makes it a convenient and scenic wine destination to explore. Its limestone-rich soils are known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay. The surrounding hills offer protection and a slightly warmer climate than the rest of Canterbury. Omihi Hills is a sub-region within Waipara Valley, featuring unique clay-limestone soils that enhance the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and impart unique minerality to the wines.

Canterbury Plains is an area that surrounds Christchurch and is home to vineyards producing aromatic whites and elegant reds. Lastly, Cheviot Hills is a small but growing area to the north with a cool climate suited to Chardonnay and Riesling.

Winemaking began in the 1970s when pioneers recognized the region’s potential for producing high-quality, cool-climate wines. Over the decades, North Canterbury has grown into one of New Zealand’s most dynamic wine regions, with a reputation for its small, family-owned wineries and a strong emphasis on organic and biodynamic practices.

The region enjoys a cool, dry climate influenced by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Southern Alps to the west. It experiences long, warm summers and crisp, cool nights, ideal for slow grape ripening. The northwesterly winds and low rainfall (about 600-800 mm annually) reduce disease pressure, allowing winemakers to focus on sustainable and organic viticulture.

North Canterbury’s boutique wineries and stunning landscapes make it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. Whether exploring the limestone-rich hills of Waipara or sipping a crisp Riesling by the Pacific Coast, North Canterbury offers an unforgettable wine experience that combines tradition, innovation, and natural beauty.
