Pinot Meunier, is a variety of red wine grape most noted for being one of the three main varieties used in the production of Champagne (the alternates being Pinot Noir or Chardonnay), and is one of the most widely planted grapes in France.
Meunier is one on the four grape varieties in the Pinot family. Originating in France, the name Pinot is derived from the French word ‘Pine’, referring to the grape variety having tightly clustered, pine cone-shaped bunches of fruit. The other relatives being Pinot Noir (Black), Pinot Blanc (White) and Pinot Gris (Grey). Although both Meunier and Noir are red varietals, Pinot Meunier produces lighter-colored wines.
Whilst Blanc, Noir and Gris are obvious to assign meaning in the translation, Meunier is a little more left field, with the translation meaning ‘Miller’ in French. Apparently, the name is derived from the appearance of the bottom of the leaf, which is white and looks like it’s been dipped in flour. I did say it was left field!
The varietal is relatively rare in Australia, although is found in some sparkling wines, but seldom seen on the label. If you do get the opportunity, its a varietal worthy of sampling. A great example can be found at Printhie Wines in Orange.
