Scenic Rim is the largest of the four Non-GI wine regions in Queensland and neighbours the Gold Coast Hinterland region to the north. The area gets its name due to the eroded terroir of an ancient shield volcano. The northern end at Marburg is on the edge of the fertile Lockyer Valley. Other vineyards are scattered through Purga, Harrisville, Boonah, Mt Alford and the rugged valleys of the Southern Border ranges. Also encompassing the rainforest beauty of Mount Tamborine and the emerald countryside of Albert River and Canungra.
The region is cooled by the higher altitudes of Tamborine Mountain and the rivers that run through the area. Queensland’s climate means the region is quite humid and hot, making the primary focus powerful red table wines and fortified wines. You will find softer varietals near the cooler, fertile valleys like Verdelho, Vermentino and Matro.
The region is a year-round destination packed with foodie experiences, outdoor activities, eco escapes and tourist attractions that submerge you in its pristine natural surroundings. Framed by dramatic volcanic mountains dating back millions of years, this region traverses peaks, valleys, and flourishing rainforests. One of the most beautiful spots in Australia, here you can discover Australia’s most accessible World Heritage-listed rainforests, six national parks and unfiltered vistas at every turn.
The scenic Rim is the perfect destination for a weekend road trip or longer stays, just 80km or an hour’s drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast in South-East Queensland.
Full of vibrant communities, local characters and plenty of things to see and do, it’s no wonder the Scenic Rim was listed as one of the world’s Top 10 Regions in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2022.
Scenic Rim is not an official wine region. It borders the other unofficial wine region of the Gold Coast Hinterland. The two areas overlap around Tambourine Mountain, and some wineries appear across both regions. As such, we have used artistic license to create the region’s borders for the embedded maps, including the wineries within this region.
