The Pemberton wine region is in the southwestern corner of Western Australia, 325km south of Perth. It forms part of the South West Australia wine zone, which it shares with Margaret River, Geographe, Manjimup, Blackwood Valleyand Great Southern. The region centres around the town of Pemberton. It is nestled in a forested area with a cool climate, ideal for grape growing.

The region was planted experimentally in 1977, with commercial vineyards following the early success in 1982.

Pemberton’s temperate climate is cooler than some of the surrounding regions, thanks partly to its altitude.  It has fewer sunshine hours, more rainfall (except in January and February), and greater relative humidity than its closest neighbour, Manjimup. The high annual rainfall keeps things lush.

The soils here vary between gravelly loams and the fertile red karri loam, promoting vigorous vine growth. Pemberton’s cooler conditions and fertile soils create wines with concentrated flavours and complex profiles.

In addition to the stunning wine, Pemberton is known for its towering karri forests and abundant natural beauty. The region is affectionately called “karri tree country” due to these stunning forests of tall karri trees (Eucalyptus diversicolor). These trees are some of the tallest in the world, reaching heights of up to 90 meters and can live for over 300 years. These forests support a rich biodiversity, providing habitat for various bird species, marsupials, and unique flora. The karri forests hold cultural significance for the Indigenous Noongar people, who have long valued these trees for their resources and the ecosystems they support. Efforts are ongoing to preserve these majestic forests and their unique ecosystems, balancing tourism and conservation.

Principal Varietals

Pemberton is most definitely a white wine region. In 2023, only 10% of the region’s crush was used for red wines.

Sauvignon Blanc is the standout wine in the region, accounting for 54% of the crush alone. The resulting wines are crisp, mineral and aromatic and display great fruit intensity.

Chardonnay is the second most planted vine in the region, with 23%. These wines are typically elegant, light to medium-bodied, with citrus and melon flavours. Leading regional examples can be opulently flavoured and structured with a creamy texture, responding well to the generous use of high-quality French oak.

The only red wine in our top 5 and one that thrives in this climate is Pinot Noir. Pemberton’s gravelly loam soils and non-irrigated vineyards produce Pinot Noir fruit with impressive varietal flavour and intensity. This varietal has been planted widely (6% of the 2023 crush) and is used to make single-varietal wines as well as vibrant sparkling wines.

Semillon (5% of the 2023 crush) is gaining recognition for its quality and characteristics in Pemberton. The varietal often exhibits bright citrus flavours, particularly lemon and lime, along with green apple and stone fruit notes. It can develop more complex characteristics like honey and toast as it ages.

Sparkling wines also show great promise here, particularly Prosecco. This wine showcases vibrant flavours of green apple, pear, and citrus, often with floral notes. It is known for its refreshing acidity and fruity character. Pemberton Prosecco is often made in a dry or extra-dry style, making it versatile for all occasions.

Noteable Varietals

Although Pemberton is King of the white wines, there are several good reds making an impression. The region is ideal for growing quality Merlot grapes. These wines are impressive either as single-varietals or blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sparkling wines made using the traditional champagne method are also popular here. They are mainly produced from relatively new Pinot Noir plantings.
