The Gulf Islands are a group of islands located in the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada, connected by a network of small ferries. They are known for their stunning natural beauty, mild climate, thriving agriculture and a small wine industry.

Salt Spring Island is the primary wine-producing island in the Gulf Islands region. It has a handful of wineries that take advantage of the island’s unique microclimate and terroir. Pender Island and Saturna Island also have smaller boutique vineyards. The first vineyards were planted on Saturna Island in 1995.

Due to the region’s maritime climate, with mild winters and warm, dry summers moderated by the surrounding ocean, the region is well-suited for cool-climate grape varieties.

Ortega is a white grape variety that thrives in cooler climates and is well-suited to the Gulf Islands’ growing conditions. Wines from Ortega grapes are often aromatic, with citrus, peach, and tropical fruit flavours. Marechal Foch is a red grape variety that can withstand cooler temperatures and is commonly grown in regions with short growing seasons. Wines made from Marechal Foch grapes are typically medium-bodied with dark fruit, spice, and earthy flavours.

The more widely known Pinot Gris is also found on the islands and produces crisp, refreshing wines with pear, apple, and citrus flavours. The Gulf Islands’ maritime climate helps to retain the grape’s natural acidity, resulting in vibrant and food-friendly wines.

In addition to Ortega, Marechal Foch, and Pinot Gris, some Gulf Islands wineries also experiment with other grape varieties, such as Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer, and Gamay, depending on their specific microclimate and vineyard conditions.

The Gulf Islands wine region is relatively small compared to other wine regions in British Columbia. Still, it is gaining recognition for its high-quality, artisanal wines and its focus on sustainable and organic farming practices.

Visitors to the Gulf Islands can explore the island’s wineries, sample local wines, and take in the breathtaking scenery of this picturesque region.
