Merlot

Merlot is a variety of red wine, dark blue in colour and is often seen as a single varietal and as a blend. According to Forbes, in 2018, it was the world’s second most planted wine grape, covering 266,000 hectares internationally. It is also the most widely planted varietal in France, accounting for 14% of the total vine area. This is mostly attributed to the fact that Merlot is one of the primary grapes used in Bordeaux wine, alongside Cabernet SauvignonCabernet FrancMalbec, and Petit Verdot.

Unfortunately, Merlot’s popularity in the US dropped after the immensely popular 2005 movie Sideways, which is a movie every wine lover must see! In contrast, Pinot Noir sales soared 16%.

Thankfully, Merlot fought back and has enjoyed a revival in recent years. Australian winemakers are making exceptional examples all across the country, and exports of the varietal have grown from 6 million litres in 2000 to over 60 million litres in 2016.

The varietal was first planted in Australia in the 1960s and comes in many forms, from smooth, easy-drinking to dark and complex. You will see examples of the single varietal, but often, it is blended. The most well-known blends are with Cabernet. The style is often fruit-driven, with flavours of berries, plums, and dark cherries.

Aromas

The aromatic profile of Merlot is inviting and well-rounded. It features juicy red and black fruits like cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. Subtle hints of cinnamon, clove, or mocha are present, as are earthy undertones of wet earth, cedar, and a touch of graphite.

Flavours

Merlot offers a lush and fruit-forward flavour profile with complementary savoury and spice elements. Black cherry, plum, and red currant dominate, with chocolate, vanilla, and cedar notes. Aged wines show flavours of leather, tobacco, and earthy nuances.

Tannins and Body

Merlot has medium tannins that are typically soft and velvety, contributing to its approachable character. It is a medium—to full-bodied wine, depending on the style and region.

Cool v Warm climate

Merlot’s style changes significantly with climate, offering a wide spectrum of flavours and structural characteristics:

Cool-climate wines have tart red fruits like cranberry and raspberry with herbal undertones such as green pepper and mint. Higher acidity results in a fresher and more vibrant profile. Firmer and more structured tannins provide a leaner and more elegant style. The wines are medium-bodied, savoury, and refined, often with a touch of minerality. You will find these in Bordeaux (Right Bank), cooler parts of Chile, and parts of Canada.

Warm-climate wines are dominated by ripe black fruits such as blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, with richer chocolate and vanilla notes. Lower acidity leads to a rounder and more opulent palate. Softer and more plush tannins create a smooth and luxurious mouthfeel. These wines are full-bodied, fruit-forward, and rich, with a velvety texture. You will find these in Napa Valley, Argentina, Australia, and parts of Southern Italy.
