Gewurztraminer is a white wine grape varietal of the pink-skinned Savagnin. It is known for producing aromatic, slightly spicy wines. It’s primarily grown in cooler wine regions and is famous for its rich, floral, and fruity flavours, often with notes of lychee, rose, and tropical fruits. The varietal is typically medium to full-bodied with low acidity and can be made in a range of styles, from dry to sweet. Due to its bold flavours, it pairs well with spicy foods, cheeses, and rich dishes. It should be served fridge cold, around 4-6 ºC. This will ensure it tastes fresh and preserves its aromas.
Most Gewürztraminer wines are not made to be aged. They’re best enjoyed young to preserve their fresh aromas. However, a few select wines from the best vintages and vineyards in Italy and France can age for a decade or more and become savoury and honeyed with time.
In the new world, Gewurztraminer presents a challenge as many wine regions are too warm to produce wine with sufficient acidity. This is unless the grapes are picked so early, as in some of Australia’s irrigated vineyards, that they have developed little Gewurztraminer character.
Australia‘s vine population is concentrated in some corners of South Australia and New South Wales, and it is often used to perfume and sweeten Riesling in commercial blends.
The variety has been more obviously successful in New Zealand‘s cooler climate. Some lively examples are from Gisborne on the East Coast of the North Island.
