Kangaroo Island wine region covers the full extent of Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia and is one of five wine regions comprising the Fleurieu zone, shared with Currency Creek, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale and Southern Fleurieu.
With 509km of coastline and stretching 155km from the east coast to the west coast, the island is home to native bushland, wildlife, and pristine beaches. With local wines and delightful produce in abundance, this region is a great place to take a long weekend away.
The region was registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) in December 2000 and as of 2018, the region had vines covering 136 hectares.
The region was sadly heavily affected by the 2020 bush-fires which decimated more than 12 hectares in one vineyard alone. The Islander Estate’s 70-tonne winery survived but fire swept over all the Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Grenache, Viognier and Semillon vines planted since 2000 at Kohinoor Hills in the centre of the island.
The fire did not miss much of the island and on 21st January the fire was declared contained, and on the 6th February declared safe. Of the 440,500 hectare island, approximately 211,000 hectares were sadly affected by this fire. But this beautiful island has begun to re-build and is welcoming visitors back to sample their local hospitality and produce.

Kangaroo Island’s cooler climate and long ripening conditions are perfect for producing elegant but powerful Cabernet, and cabernet blends, in particular Cabernet Sauvignon, featuring cherries, dark berries and spice.
Possibly the well-known varietal in Australia is also at home here, with local Shiraz showing flavours of plum and berries combined with dark coffee notes.
Not to ignore the whites, both Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are on tasting around the Island with the Chardonnay from Kangaroo Island offering lively and vibrant notes with white peach and citrus flavours.
